Bodega del Tupun Vulcano Grand Reserva 2005

Tupun Vulcano

This is a great wine.  It took the gold medal at Denver International Wine Festival, in the “Other New World” category.  And this wine is deserving of the honor.  Hailing from Tupungato, a sub region of Mendoza, Argentina, this is a blend of 50% Bonarda and 50% Malbec.  Planted in sandy soil at an altitude of 3600ft, the vines are grown on a high trellis.

This full bodied wine sees 18 months in oak.  Aromas of dark fruits, vanilla and cocoa, tobacco and truffle lead into the flavors of blueberry, currant and stewed bing cherries.  It finishes with a refreshing acidity and spice that goes on and on.  There’s also a minerality on the finish that adds a nice complexity.  I would rate this wine 90 points on my scale, and would highly recommend it at it’s $20 price tag.

I would recommend pairing this wine with grilled or stewed meets.  Also pair with stronger cheeses such as Camembert or Teleggio.

I tried this wine plus other wines of this winery, and truly I believe they are really bad.

Please be careful what you recomend.

What didn’t you like about this wine? I’ve sold this wine for years, and you’re the first to dislike it.

Don’t worry, I am very careful about what I recommend, especially what I write about on my site. I only recommend wines that provide good value, are varietally correct, and are not mass-produced.

Are you kidding me Jim? This wine is fantastic! I’ve also tried other wines from the same producer and they are great(Malbec, Viognier, Bonarda, Cabernet Sauvignon). I don’t know your background in wine, but these wines are great values for the money! I’m a sommelier and have tried quite a few wines through the years so I think I know what I’m talking about. You should be careful with what you say since you might not really know what you’re talking about even though everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Are you one of those who says Yellow Tail is the best?
    John
